Exercise Pitch Black 2026: Indian Air Force Rafale Fighters Arrive in Australia for Multinational Mega Air Combat Drill
NEW DELHI JULY 19: The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to commence its participation in Exercise Pitch Black 2026 tomorrow at the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Base Darwin. Scheduled to run from July 20 to August 7, 2026, Pitch Black serves as the RAAF’s flagship premier biennial multinational air combat exercise, renowned for its challenging night-flying operations conducted over the expansive, unpopulated expanses of northern Australia. Marking its 45-year history, this year’s massive edition stands out for its unprecedented scale, gathering a significant volume of global military assets and personnel to execute highly complex Large Force Employment (LFE) strategies and cooperative aerial combat maneuvers.
Representing India on this global stage is a highly skilled contingent of IAF “Air Warriors”—comprising frontline combat pilots, experienced engineers, technicians, air traffic controllers, and strategic subject matter experts. The Indian fleet will primarily operate its advanced Rafale multirole fighter aircraft, bolstered by a strong combat support network featuring C-17 Globemaster-III heavy-lift transport aircraft and IL-78 Air-to-Air Refueling tankers. This rigorous deployment offers a crucial platform for the participating international air forces to validate long-distance expeditionary operations, exchange best practices, and fine-tune interoperability within a highly demanding, realistic combat environment. Having previously joined the 2018, 2022, and 2024 editions, the IAF’s continued presence underscores India’s deep commitment to enhancing Indo-Pacific defense partnerships and fostering regional security synergy.
