PM Modi cuts official convoy size by half to promote fuel conservation

NEW DELHI, May 13, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ordered a 50 percent reduction in the number of vehicles in his official convoy as part of a significant austerity drive.

This decision comes in response to the ongoing West Asia crisis and the subsequent rise in global crude oil prices. Sources indicate that the Prime Minister has already implemented this smaller motorcade during recent visits to Vadodara and Guwahati.

While the Special Protection Group ensures that security remains uncompromised, the move is intended to set a national example for responsible fuel consumption during the economic uncertainty surrounding the US-Iran conflict.

In addition to reducing the number of vehicles, the Prime Minister has instructed the security teams to prioritize the use of electric vehicles within the existing fleet. To maintain the focus on austerity, he has specified that no new vehicles should be purchased for this transition, emphasizing the optimization of current resources instead.

This initiative follows a broader appeal to citizens to adopt more sustainable lifestyle choices, such as reducing unnecessary travel and fuel use, to help the country navigate the impact of volatile global energy markets.
