National Conference Udhampur Rural Raises Public Issues at Majalta Meeting; Assures Early Action on Degree College, Water and Road Problems

Majalta, Udhampur, August 2: The National Conference District Udhampur Rural today organized a public meeting at Panchayat Majalta in Constituency East, Block Majalta. The meeting witnessed enthusiastic participation from people representing all the 14 Panchayats of the block, who raised several long-pending public issues and sought their early resolution.

During the meeting, residents expressed serious concern over the poor condition of roads and demanded immediate blacktopping of all major roads in the area. The participants also highlighted the severe drinking water crisis, stating that several villages have not been receiving regular water supply for the last eight years.

They alleged that the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in Majalta Tehsil has failed to meet the expectations of the people.The gathering further demanded the installation of electricity poles in uncovered areas and urged the government to fill the shortage of teaching staff in government schools to improve the quality of education.

The most important issue raised during the meeting was the demand for introducing all major academic subjects at the Government Degree College, Majalta. The residents said that due to the limited availability of subjects, students are compelled to travel to Jammu, Kathua and Udhampur for higher education, causing financial and academic hardship to many families.

People from Samal Panchayat also appealed for the construction of a bridge leading to the local graveyard. They informed the meeting that villagers are currently forced to cross a stream to reach the graveyard, creating serious difficulties, particularly during the rainy season.

Addressing the gathering, Ram Parshotam Sharma, District President, National Conference Udhampur Rural, thanked the Government of Jammu & Kashmir, Party President Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and Forest Minister Javed Ahmed Raina for implementing the Forest Act.

He described it as one of the landmark achievements of the National Conference government and said the legislation would provide major benefits to people living in forest areas, especially the Gujjar, Bakerwal and Gaddi communities.

Ram Parshotam Sharma assured the gathering that the issue of introducing additional subjects at Government Degree College, Majalta would be taken up with Higher Education Minister Sakeena Itoo during a meeting scheduled on 10 August 2026. He also said that he immediately contacted the concerned officers regarding the shortage of drinking water and electricity and urged them to restore these essential services without delay.

Speaking on the occasion, Shanker Singh, Block President, Majalta, said that organisational committees in all the 14 Panchayats of Block Majalta have been constituted successfully. He expressed confidence that the National Conference would register a strong performance in the forthcoming Panchayat elections and continue to enjoy overwhelming public support in the area.
