Srinagar Police Solve Blind Murder Case in Six Hours, Arrest Mother-Son Duo in Kupwara

SRINAGAR, JULY 31, 2026 — Srinagar Police successfully solved a blind murder case within six hours following the discovery of an unidentified dead body, leading to the arrest of a mother-son duo who had fled the city to evade law enforcement.

The case originated on July 30, 2026, when Khanyar Police Station received information regarding a body wrapped in gunny bags floating in the Babademb Canal beneath the Baba Dawood Khakhi Bridge in Khanyar. Authorities registered FIR No. 49/2026 under Sections 103 and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and immediately launched an investigation. Given the severity of the crime, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed under senior police supervision.

Through continuous technical analysis and evidence gathering, police identified the victim as Nazir Ahmad Bhat, son of Ghulam Mohammad Bhat, a resident of Kalantpora, Hawal. Investigators established that Bhat was killed inside a rented accommodation in Mughal Mohalla, Rainawari, following a financial dispute. To destroy evidence and conceal the crime, the perpetrators dumped his body into the canal.

The suspects were identified as Haleema Bano and her son Moomin Ahmad, native residents of Machil, Kupwara, who were living as tenants in Rainawari. Following the murder, both suspects fled Srinagar toward northern Kashmir. Srinagar Police tracked their movements across multiple leads, pursuing them to Lolab in Kupwara, where both were apprehended within hours of the body’s recovery. Incriminating physical evidence linked to the crime has been recovered, and further investigation is ongoing to complete legal formalities and determine if any accomplices were involved.
