Budgam Police File FIR After Man operating fake whatsapp Account in the name of SSP Budgam
SRINAGAR, APRIL 14, 2026: Authorities in Budgam have initiated legal proceedings against a local man following reports that he was operating a fraudulent WhatsApp account of the Senior Superintendent of Police.
Law enforcement officials identified the suspect as Sameer Ali Bhat, a resident of Pallar Budgam, who allegedly used a fake profile to share fabricated chat screenshots with the public.
By portraying himself as a close associate of the SSP, the individual aimed to exert undue influence and deceive citizens.
A formal investigation revealed that the suspect was using a specific mobile number to run the counterfeit account while already being linked to several other criminal cases.
In response to these findings, the Budgam Police Station registered FIR No. 90/2026 under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act.
This swift action underscores the commitment of the department to maintain digital integrity and protect the reputation of public offices from impersonation attempts.
Following the incident, the police department issued an advisory urging the general public to stay alert and avoid falling for similar scams.
Citizens are encouraged to verify the identity of officials by using only the contact details published on the official government website.
The statement also requested that any suspicious digital activity or impersonation attempts be reported immediately to the nearest police station to ensure that legal measures are taken against those attempting to exploit public trust.
