Tamil Nadu Political Shift: CM Vijay Secures Victory in Assembly Trust Vote
Chennai, May 13, 2026Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay successfully proved his majority in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly today, with his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government winning the floor test by securing 144 votes.
The confidence motion was passed comfortably as the ruling party received crucial support from its allies, including Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK, and IUML. The victory was further bolstered by a significant group of 25 rebel AIADMK legislators who defied their party whip to vote in favor of the new administration, alongside an independent MLA.
During the proceedings, 22 members voted against the motion while five opted to abstain from the process. The main opposition, DMK, led by Udhayanidhi Stalin, staged a walkout before the voting commenced after expressing concerns over the government’s mandate.
In his address to the House following the win, Chief Minister Vijay reaffirmed his commitment to a secular and inclusive government, promising to uphold social justice and continue essential welfare schemes.
This successful trust vote solidifies the TVK’s position as it begins its five-year term, marking a major turning point in the state’s political history.
