Italy welcomes United States and Iran memorandum of understanding
ROME, June 15, 2026 — Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced that Italy, alongside France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, has expressed strong appreciation for the memorandum of understanding signed between the United States and Iran.
Meloni extended gratitude to all mediators, highlighting Qatar and Pakistan for making the agreement possible. She described the memorandum as an opportunity for peace that must be seized, affirming Italy’s readiness to support the diplomatic process toward a comprehensive agreement.
Meloni emphasized that the guiding principles remain clear, stating that Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons and maritime freedom must be guaranteed.
Subject to necessary parliamentary approval, Italy and its partners are prepared to contribute to an international naval presence to support the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Additionally, the Italian leader called for an end to hostilities in Lebanon, where Italy intends to continue working to support Lebanese sovereignty.
