New Zealand Welcomes United States and Iran Memorandum of Understanding to End Middle East Conflict

WELLINGTON, June 15, 2026 – Foreign Minister Winston Peters announced that New Zealand welcomes the acceptance of the United States and Iran Memorandum of Understanding aimed at ending the conflict in the Middle East.

Peters described the pivotal and constructive deal as a significant step toward reducing tensions and promoting stability in a region critical to global economic security.

He noted that the ongoing disruption to the Strait of Hormuz has had serious economic impacts on New Zealand as well as its Pacific partners, emphasizing that the country welcomes any steps that will enable the safe reopening of the vital maritime route and restore confidence in key supply chains.

Highlighting that dialogue and diplomacy remain the most effective means of resolving longstanding issues, Peters called the agreement a good first step and urged all involved parties to seize the opportunity to resolve regional tensions.
