Jyotiraditya Scindia Inaugurates 100th N-Gen Post Office at NEHU Shillong
SHILLONG, MAY 06: Jyotiraditya Scindia, Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, virtually inaugurated India Post’s 100th N-Gen Post Office today at North-Eastern Hill University.
This milestone marks a significant achievement in the government’s effort to transform traditional postal hubs into modern, digitally enabled service centers tailored for the youth. Developed within educational campuses like IITs, IIMs, and major universities, these “Next-Gen” spaces offer contemporary amenities including free Wi-Fi, QR-based payment systems, and dedicated student service counters.
The initiative aims to align postal services with the aspirations of a dynamic nation while fostering a community spirit through a blend of modern technology and the traditional art of letter writing.
During the inauguration, the Minister emphasized that the N-Gen project embodies a participatory spirit, often being designed “by the students, of the students, and for the students.” At the NEHU facility, students from the Department of Architecture contributed to the visual identity and artwork, incorporating themes that resonate with Shillong’s famous music culture.
The space is uniquely curated using sustainable, indigenous materials like bamboo and straw, reflecting the cultural heritage of Meghalaya. Furthermore, the NEHU post office is an all-women-led facility, highlighting the government’s focus on women-led development and the role of “Matrushakti” in building a modernized, inclusive India.
Reflecting on the journey that began just six months ago at IIT Delhi, Scindia noted that the rapid expansion to 100 locations demonstrates a successful outreach to the younger generation. The initiative has introduced concessional parcel services and interactive zones where students can engage with one another, effectively turning the post office into a vibrant social hub.
Under the leadership of Narendra Modi, India Post is evolving into a future-ready logistics and service network. The department remains committed to scaling these reforms across the country, ensuring that essential government services remain accessible and relevant to India’s youth.
