Jammu and Kashmir ranks second nationally in PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana implementation
SRINAGAR, June 04, 2026: The Jammu and Kashmir Power Development Department achieved a significant milestone by securing the second position nationally for rooftop solar applications, installations, and inspections during May 2026. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy conferred the national award during an event celebrating the rooftop solar initiative in New Delhi.
On behalf of the Union Territory, the award was received by Mahmood Ahmad Shah, Managing Director of the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited. The recognition highlights the collaborative efforts of local power distribution corporations, field workers, district administrations, empanelled vendors, and residents in driving green energy adoption.
The central government’s flagship scheme aims to equip 10 million households across India with rooftop solar systems between April 2024 and March 2027, with over 3.3 million installations completed nationwide so far. In Jammu and Kashmir, ground implementation commenced in July 2024 and has since maintained a steady upward trajectory.
To date, 98,601 applications have been registered on the national portal from the region, consisting of 29,402 under the Jammu Power Distribution Corporation Limited and 69,184 under the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited. These registrations have translated into 33,987 successfully commissioned installations, split between 12,730 in the Jammu region and 21,255 in the Kashmir region.
This widespread deployment has added 121.61 megawatts of renewable energy capacity to the Union Territory, with the Jammu division contributing 44.68 megawatts and the Kashmir division contributing 76.92 megawatts. The capacity addition helps reduce regional dependence on conventional power sources. Financially, a central subsidy totaling 258.18 crore rupees alongside an additional Union Territory subsidy of 10 crore rupees has been disbursed directly to local beneficiaries. Low-interest bank financing has driven over 80 percent of these installations, with J&K Bank serving as the primary lender by sanctioning or disbursing 27,075 of the 45,321 loan applications received.
The initiative has also expanded the local clean energy business ecosystem. Jammu and Kashmir now accounts for more than 300 active local empanelled vendors out of roughly 900 registered nationally, generating local employment and competitive service delivery. Performance during May 2026 was notably strong, adding 4,559 new applications, 2,579 completed installations, and 2,688 completed utility inspections to expedite subsidy claims.
Year-over-year data shows an impressive 77 percent increase in rooftop solar installations compared to May 2025, validating growing consumer trust and an accelerated shift toward sustainable energy solutions.
