Indian Navy ship IOS Sagar arrives in Chattogram to strengthen maritime ties with Bangladesh

CHATTOGRAM, May 8, 2026 — High Commission of India in Bangladesh Posted on X (Twitter ) in which stated that Indian Ocean Ship Sagar entered Chattogram harbor today following a successful transit through the Bay of Bengal as part of the multinational IOS SAGAR 2026 deployment.

The vessel was welcomed into Bangladesh waters by BNS Ali Haider and escorted to the port, marking a significant high-profile visit aimed at reinforcing the partnership between the Indian and Bangladesh navies.

This port call serves as a practical application of India’s Neighbourhood First policy and the MAHASAGAR initiative, which focuses on holistic security and growth across the Indian Ocean Region.

The visit includes a comprehensive itinerary of diplomatic and professional engagements, beginning with high-level meetings between the Commanding Officer of IOS Sagar and senior Bangladesh naval leadership, including the Commander Chattogram Naval Area and the Commander Bangladesh Naval Fleet.

To honor shared history, the Commanding Officer will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Chattogram Commonwealth War Cemetery. Additionally, discussions with the Chattogram Port Authority will focus on maritime logistics and port security, complemented by professional cross-deck visits between the international crew and Bangladesh Navy personnel.

Beyond operational exchanges, the deployment emphasizes training and cultural diplomacy. The crew is scheduled to visit the BNS Issa Khan Training Complex and the Bangladesh Naval Academy to share methodologies and foster mutual capacity building.

Social and sports events, including a friendly football match and official deck receptions hosted by both navies, are planned to strengthen the esprit de corps between the services. These interactions highlight the deep-rooted bonds and the shared commitment of both neighboring nations to maintain a stable and secure maritime environment.
