AI and Soil: APEDA’s 70-Year Pilibhit Pact Set to Revolutionize Global Basmati Exports

PILIBHIT 30 APR 2026 :- In a landmark move to cement India’s dominance in the global aromatic rice market, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has officially inked a 70-year lease agreement with the Government of Uttar Pradesh to establish the nation’s first integrated Basmati and Organic Training Centre-cum-Demo Farm. Situated on seven acres in Tanda Bijaisi, Pilibhit, this facility marks a strategic shift toward tech-driven, sustainable agriculture. The center is designed to be a holistic hub featuring a state-of-the-art auditorium, a dedicated organic farming laboratory, and a specialized museum aimed at preserving the heritage of Basmati while pushing the boundaries of modern cultivation.

Beyond traditional farming, the initiative introduces a digital frontier with the launch of India’s first AI-based Basmati Paddy Survey project (2026–2028). This ambitious tech venture, a collaboration between APEDA and the All-India Rice Exporters Association (AIREA), will monitor 4 million hectares and analyze data from 150,000 ground-truth points. By engaging over 500,000 farmers, the project aims to provide pinpoint accuracy in crop assessment and varietal identification, ensuring that export planning is backed by real-time scientific data. Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada emphasized that the integration of AI-based interactive learning and dedicated seed outlets will empower local growers to meet rigorous international standards.

The Pilibhit facility has also secured a prestigious designation as an All India Coordinated Research Projects (AICRP) center. This elevates the region to a national level for Basmati trials, making it only the third such site in Uttar Pradesh’s coveted GI (Geographical Indication) zone. With Basmati exports already hitting a staggering USD 5.67 billion in the 2025–26 cycle, this new research and training powerhouse is poised to optimize yields and quality for the 6.5 million metric tonnes of rice flowing to markets in Europe, North America, and the Middle East. By blending 70 years of land security with cutting-edge AI, India is securing the future of its “scented pearl” for generations to come.
