KISHTWAR, AUGUST 01, 2026 — A cloudburst struck the Chhatroo area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district early Saturday morning, triggering localized flash floods that inundated commercial establishments and damaged several shops, though officials confirmed that no loss of life has been reported in the incident.

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh took immediate stock of the situation, confirming in a statement on social media platform X that he personally reached out to Kishtwar Deputy Commissioner (DC) Pankaj Kumar Sharma right after receiving reports of the sudden weather event. Reassuring the local populace, the Union Minister pledged that owners of affected commercial outlets and shops will receive due financial compensation following official damage assessments.

Addressing public concerns over recurring high-altitude weather anomalies, Dr. Singh highlighted significant technological advancements made since last year’s Chasoti cloudburst, revealing that the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India, has already deployed two state-of-the-art “Early Warning Systems” (EWS) in Kishtwar and Machhail to enhance disaster preparedness. Furthermore, an advanced “Automatic Weather Station” (AWS) is currently in the installation pipeline for the Padder region to further bolster localized monitoring and real-time alerts across the vulnerable mountainous terrain.
