Jammu Municipal Corporation Deploys Coconut Shredder to Combat Drain Clogging and Boost Sustainability
JAMMU AUGUST 01— Strengthening its scientific waste management efforts under the Swachh Bharat Mission, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) launched a dedicated Coconut Shredding Unit at Bhagwati Nagar. The new facility was officially inaugurated by JMC Commissioner Devansh Yadav.
The targeted initiative directly tackles a recurring monsoon challenge: discarded coconut shells choking municipal drains and sewer networks, leading to urban waterlogging and street overflow. Empty shells left on roads, in open bins, or swept into drainage channels have long presented significant sanitation and environmental hurdles across the city.
Under the newly established operational framework, JMC will collect raw coconut waste straight from commercial vendors throughout Jammu and route it to the Bhagwati Nagar processing plant. The discarded shells will be mechanically shredded into cocopeat—a high-value, eco-friendly organic medium used extensively in horticulture, urban landscaping, and soil composting.
Highlighting the project’s dual benefits, Commissioner Devansh Yadav announced that all registered coconut vendors will receive official JMC identification stickers. These markers will allow municipal collection fleets to easily locate vendors and maintain a structured, daily waste pickup schedule. The program aims to systematically eliminate drainage blockages during heavy rains while converting single-use organic waste into a marketable, circular economy resource.
Municipal leadership urged both local business owners and residents to actively support the initiative by disposing of organic shell waste responsibly.
Key municipal officials attending the launch included Joint Commissioner of Health & Sanitation Abdul Sattar, Health Officer Dr. Shahid Hussain, Assistant Floriculture Officer Dr. Rabia Khan, Veterinary Assistant Surgeon Dr. Divya Sharma, and Executive Engineer for the Mechanical Division Talat Mahmood Khan.
