Government creating new opportunities in tourism sector despite regional challenges
SRINAGAR, June 1 — Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Information Technology, Youth Services and Sports, and Science and Technology Satish Sharma highlighted the immense opportunities being created by the government in the tourism sector today, stating that Jammu and Kashmir continues to emerge as a promising destination for investment, entrepreneurship, and employment despite facing geographical and climatic challenges.
Addressing the participants at the Jammu Kashmir Business Conclave 2026, the Minister said that the government is committed to transforming the region into a vibrant hub of tourism-driven economic growth by creating a conducive environment for businesses, startups, and local entrepreneurs. He observed that while the region has historically faced harsh weather conditions, these factors have not deterred the administration from pursuing an ambitious development agenda through sustained investments in infrastructure, digital connectivity, hospitality, and transportation.
The Minister emphasized that tourism remains one of the strongest pillars of the regional economy, with immense potential to generate employment for youth, empower local communities, and promote sustainable development. Focused interventions by the government have successfully expanded tourism beyond traditional destinations, encouraging visitors to explore emerging tourist circuits, rural locations, and adventure tourism opportunities.
Furthermore, the government’s emphasis on technological innovation and digital governance is strengthening the tourism ecosystem, making Jammu and Kashmir increasingly accessible to visitors and investors alike. Highlighting the role of young entrepreneurs, Satish Sharma stated that the government is actively supporting innovation and a startup culture, particularly in tourism-linked sectors such as hospitality, handicrafts, transport services, and adventure sports.
He expressed confidence that the resilience of the people combined with proactive public policies will ensure the benefits of tourism reach every section of society, calling upon industry leaders and investors at the conclave to explore the vast, robust potential of the region.
