Multinational military exercise Pragati 2026 set to start in Meghalaya
NEW DELHI, 13 May 2026 :- The Joint Training Node at Umroi in Meghalaya is ready to host Exercise Pragati 2026, a significant multinational military program scheduled from 20 to 31 May.
Military contingents from friendly regional nations are expected to begin arriving in the state on 18 May. Pragati, which stands for Partnership of Regional Armies for Growth and Transformation in the Indian Ocean Region, highlights a shared commitment to professional cooperation and collective security preparedness.
A total of twelve nations are participating in the event, including Bhutan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Philippines, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam.
The scenic location in Meghalaya provides a strategic environment for training, with its undulating terrain and natural jungle cover offering ideal conditions for tactical drills and joint operational planning. The exercise aims to foster trust and enhance the ability of these diverse armies to work together effectively.
The training node at Umroi is equipped with advanced infrastructure such as a Joint Warfare Centre, reflex shooting ranges, and a heliborne operations area. During the event, troops will practice various skills including obstacle negotiation, room intervention, and casualty evacuation.
These facilities are designed to support high-level command procedures and endurance training, ensuring that the participating forces are well-prepared for modern security challenges.The training will conclude with a rigorous 72-hour validation exercise to test the interoperability achieved by the multinational contingents.
High-level delegations, including Vice Chiefs and senior commanders from the participating countries, are scheduled to attend the final phase. Their presence will facilitate a review of the training outcomes and strengthen the foundations for future defense cooperation and diplomatic engagement in the region.
Exercise Pragati 2026 is conducted with a focus on equality and mutual respect among all participating armies. By organizing this large-scale event, the Indian Army continues to demonstrate its commitment to constructive engagement with international partners.
The initiative focuses on addressing common security concerns through shared learning, joint training, and the development of strong military-to-military relationships across the Indian Ocean Region.
