Leh-Manali Highway Reopens as BRO Restores Connectivity Across High-Altitude Passes
LEH, MAY 12, 2026 — The Border Roads Organization has successfully restored connectivity on the strategically vital Leh-Manali National Highway, NH-03, reaching up to Sarchu.
This massive operation, carried out by Project Himank and Project Deepak, involved clearing heavy snow accumulation from high-altitude passes including Tanglang La at 17,482 feet, Lachulung La at 16,616 feet, and Nakee La at 15,547 feet.
Despite starting the mission on March 16, 2026, the teams faced extreme sub-zero temperatures, treacherous terrain at the Gata Loops, and frequent avalanche-prone conditions.
The tireless efforts of the crews allowed them to widen the route to a double-lane road, officially reopening the highway for traffic movement on May 12, 2026, and reconnecting the Ladakh region to the rest of the country.
