Jammu & Kashmir Launches Massive Sports Infrastructure Drive with Over 570 Projects Underway
JAMMU, JULY 14, 2026 — Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing a significant transformation of its sporting landscape, with more than 570 infrastructure projects currently in various stages of development. Representing an investment exceeding ₹650 crore for the current financial year, this comprehensive expansion by the Department of Youth Services and Sports is designed to create an equitable, future-ready sports ecosystem that serves every region, from urban centers to remote, mountainous, and border districts.
During the first quarterly review meeting held today, Commissioner Secretary of Youth Services and Sports, Shahid Iqbal Choudhary, evaluated the implementation of this ambitious roadmap. The progress report highlights a coordinated effort between the Directorate of Youth Services and Sports, which is managing 315 projects, and the J&K Sports Council, which is overseeing 263 initiatives. These efforts are funded through a blend of Capital Expenditure (CapEx), Special Assistance to Capital Investment (SASCI), and the Centrally Sponsored Khelo India Mission, aiming to deliver facilities ranging from multi-sport hubs like Khel Gaon in Nagrota to specialized academies for cricket, winter sports, and swimming across all twenty districts.
Aligning with the vision of the Khelo Bharat Niti, the administration is shifting toward a strategic, data-driven model for infrastructure development. A key component of this approach is the creation of a comprehensive geo-spatial inventory. By geo-tagging every stadium, playfield, indoor hall, and academy on a new GIS-based platform, the department intends to conduct precise infrastructure gap analyses. This will ensure that future investments are directed toward underserved areas based on population density, accessibility, and actual sporting potential, rather than relying on uncoordinated expansion.
Beyond the construction of assets—which includes Khel Bhawans, synthetic turfs, athletic tracks, and community sports complexes—the department is prioritizing strict quality control, transparent tendering, and digital project monitoring. The goal is to establish vibrant community spaces that nurture grassroots talent while providing high-performance athletes with the resources required for national and international competition. This infrastructure push is designed not only to build physical facilities but to cement Jammu and Kashmir’s position as a leading destination for sports, providing long-term opportunities for the youth of the Union Territory.
