Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Urges Banking Sector To Boost Economic Growth In Jammu And Kashmir
SRINAGAR, APRIL 14:-Chief Minister Omar Abdullah addressed a senior management meeting of Axis Bank today, highlighting the vital necessity of banking partnerships in fostering a resilient and future-ready economy.
Speaking at the gathering in Srinagar, Abdullah emphasized that financial institutions are essential drivers for inclusion, entrepreneurship, and sustainable development across the Union Territory.
He noted that while the region faces unique geographical and market challenges, it remains incredibly rich in untapped potential, particularly within the sectors of tourism, agriculture, and small-scale industries.
The Chief Minister specifically pointed toward the transformation of Jammu and Kashmir’s infrastructure and the rapid expansion of its entrepreneurial ecosystem.
He praised the presence of established financial networks but called for a more aggressive approach to credit access and digital finance.
For instance, in the tourism sector, he suggested that banks could collaborate with the government to modernize guest experiences at major sites like the Gulmarg Gondola through improved ticketing technology and queue management.
By integrating financial expertise with public services, the administration aims to create a more efficient and user-friendly environment for both locals and visitors.
Beyond tourism, the Chief Minister stressed that agriculture and horticulture continue to be the backbone of the region’s economy, contributing significantly to the Gross State Domestic Product.
He urged banks to design innovative financial products specifically tailored for farmers and small business owners to help them access better markets and strengthen their supply chains.
Reaffirming the government’s support, Abdullah invited the banking sector to expand its footprint in underserved areas and invest in the youth through startup financing and corporate social responsibility initiatives, ensuring that the benefits of economic progress reach every corner of Jammu and Kashmir.
