Udhampur cocoon auction market generates record turnover with high prices

UDHAMPUR, JUNE 7 — The ongoing Cocoon Auction Market at Udhampur, organized by the Sericulture Department, has recorded significant participation and strong prices on its second day. The auction market, which commenced on June 6 and is scheduled to continue until June 20, was officially inaugurated by the Additional Director of Sericulture Jammu in the presence of PEO Sushma Gautam and District Sericulture Officer Kavita Sharma.

During the auction sessions held today, a total of 5,413.350 kilograms of cocoons were successfully auctioned, generating a substantial turnover of ₹25,60,679. Market transactions revealed robust demand, with the average market rate recorded at ₹1,410 per kilogram, while the highest bid reached an impressive ₹1,810 per kilogram.

A large number of silkworm rearers and farmers from different areas of the district participated enthusiastically in the competitive bidding process.

The growers expressed great satisfaction over the remunerative and fair prices received for their produce, which is expected to provide a significant economic boost to the local sericulture sector.

The ongoing marketplace is serving as an important economic platform for farmers to secure profitable returns for their yields, contributing positively toward the long-term promotion and development of sericulture in the region.
