Tragedy Near Udhampur: GCW Gandhi Nagar Student Dies After Falling from Moving Picnic Bus

UDHAMPUR, April 16, 2026 — A celebratory college outing turned into a profound tragedy on Thursday when a young female student from the Government College for Women (GCW), Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, lost her life in a freak accident on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH 44).

The victim was part of a student group traveling toward the Patnitop hill station for a scheduled college picnic. Reports indicate that as the bus was navigating the highway near the Shardha Mata Temple, the vehicle’s door unexpectedly swung open, causing the student to lose her balance and fall onto the moving roadway.

The victim was immediately rushed to the Associated Hospital, Government Medical College (GMC) Udhampur, where medical staff attempted emergency life-saving interventions.

Despite their efforts, the student succumbed to the severity of her injuries shortly after arrival. Her body has since been moved to the hospital mortuary for a formal post-mortem examination.

In the wake of the incident, Udhampur Police have registered a case and launched a comprehensive investigation to determine whether the accident was caused by mechanical failure of the door or negligence, as the academic community mourns the sudden loss of a promising young life.
