Indian Railways Approves Final Location Survey for 190-km Reasi–Poonch Rail Link in Jammu & Kashmir
NEW DELHI, APRIL 10, 2026— In a major boost to regional connectivity and border infrastructure, the Ministry of Railways has officially sanctioned the Final Location Survey (FLS) for a new 190-kilometre railway line connecting Reasi and Poonch in Jammu and Kashmir.
According to a formal communication issued by the Railway Board on April 8, the Northern Railway has been authorized to spearhead the survey, which is estimated to cost ₹26.41 crore. The expenditure for this critical preliminary phase will be allocated under the Railways’ budget for policy formulation, research, and miscellaneous works.
The proposed rail link is strategically significant as it aims to provide reliable all-weather connectivity to the border districts of the Union Territory, significantly improving access to remote areas situated along the Line of Control (LoC).
This Final Location Survey will play a pivotal role in determining the technical feasibility, precise alignment, and logistical requirements of the mountainous terrain.
Once completed, the project is expected to integrate the frontier regions more closely with the national rail network, facilitating both economic development and enhanced movement for security forces in the sensitive region.
