Srinagar Urban Renewal: Omar Abdullah Unveils ₹3.17 Crore Community Center and Plans Modern Housing to Decongest City
SRINAGAR, April 09, 2026: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today inaugurated the Imam-ul-Asr Maulana Anwar Shah Kashmiri (RA) Community Hall at Umerhair, Buchpora, marking a significant step toward improving social infrastructure in the Hazratbal constituency.
Built at a cost of ₹3.17 crore, the multi-purpose facility is designed to provide an affordable and dignified venue for weddings and community gatherings, specifically catering to families who find private banquet halls financially out of reach.
During the ceremony, the Chief Minister outlined a bold vision for the future of Srinagar, announcing plans to develop modern, well-planned residential colonies to alleviate the severe congestion currently plaguing the old city.
He emphasized that providing affordable and dignified housing to the underprivileged is not just an administrative goal but a fundamental duty of his government.
Beyond urban planning, Omar Abdullah highlighted a broad spectrum of governance successes and future priorities, including the overwhelming success of free bus travel for women and the fulfillment of election promises such as the provision of six free LPG cylinders for eligible families.
He also stressed the need to strengthen decentralized healthcare to reduce pressure on major city hospitals and called for the establishment of a local library to empower youth and preserve the intellectual legacy of Maulana Anwar Shah Kashmiri (RA).
The event, attended by high-ranking officials including MLA Salman Ali Sagar, Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani, and Commissioner SMC Fazlul Haseeb, concluded with a directive to the Srinagar Municipal Corporation to further enhance the area with landscaping and expanded parking, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to transforming Srinagar into a world-class, liveable city.
