CBI Apprehends GST Superintendent and Inspector in Ranipet Bribery Sting
Chennai, April 08, 2026 — The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Superintendent and an Inspector of Goods and Services Tax (GST) in connection with a bribery case in Ranipet, Tamil Nadu.
The action followed a registered complaint alleging that the Superintendent of GST, Ranipet Range, demanded an “undue advantage” of ₹30,000 from a citizen to facilitate the clearance of a GST registration.
After a period of negotiation, the accused official reportedly agreed to accept a reduced bribe of ₹15,000, instructing the complainant to deliver the cash on April 7, 2026.Upon receiving the report, the CBI orchestrated a tactical trap operation on the scheduled date.
During the proceedings, the Superintendent was caught while demanding the illicit payment. The investigation quickly expanded as the role of a GST Inspector from the same range surfaced.
In a desperate attempt to evade capture, the accused Inspector reportedly concealed the bribe money in a toilet commode and attempted to flush it away upon spotting the CBI trap team.
However, officials successfully recovered the currency from the toilet, leading to the immediate arrest of both public servants.The CBI has confirmed that further investigations are currently underway to uncover the full extent of the malpractice.
