Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Calls for Collective Public Action to Drive Social Transformation in J&K
JAMMU, April 8, 2026— Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today emphasized that societal transformation can only be achieved through collective responsibility, asserting that while the government is responsible for infrastructure like roads and hospitals, the public must lead the way in civic and social duties.
Speaking at the launch of a three-day divisional-level awareness program organized by the School Education Department at the Convention Centre, the Chief Minister urged citizens to move beyond shifting blame to the government and instead adopt responsible behaviors in daily life.
He noted that if the people of Jammu & Kashmir actively participate in maintenance and cleanliness initiatives, the region can compete with global standards of development and civic excellence.
During the event, the Chief Minister led a comprehensive pledge focused on mental health, drug de-addiction, environmental protection, and road safety. Addressing the stigma surrounding mental health, he called for empathy and understanding toward those facing psychological challenges, noting that simple acts of sympathy can save lives.
On the critical issue of drug abuse, Omar Abdullah stated firmly that the government cannot win this battle in isolation; he appealed to civil society, religious leaders, and educational institutions to join a united front to make the Union Territory drug-free.
He also advocated for meaningful environmental contributions, suggesting that citizens plant trees instead of offering ceremonial gifts like shawls to officials. The program, which was also addressed by Minister for Education Sakeena Itoo, Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani, and MLA Arvind Gupta, featured the distribution of innovation, sanitation, and stationery kits sponsored by Bharti Airtel and the SBI Foundation.
Minister Sakeena Itoo praised the enthusiastic student participation, describing the campaign as a vital platform for addressing pressing issues like traffic safety and career counseling. The Chief Minister concluded by advising students to balance their digital lives by reducing screen time and focusing on holistic development, expressing his firm belief that the younger generation has the vision and drive to lead Jammu & Kashmir toward a more prosperous and responsible future.
