Australia Welcomes Middle East Ceasefire and Calls for Permanent Resolution to Energy Crisis

CANBERRA, April 8, 2026 — Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Affairs Minister Senator Penny Wong issued a joint statement today officially welcoming the two-week ceasefire agreement reached between the United States, Israel, and Iran.

The Australian government, which has long advocated for regional de-escalation, expressed strong support for the diplomatic breakthrough aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict.

Highlighting the severe global consequences of the war, the statement noted that Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz and strikes on energy infrastructure have caused “unprecedented energy supply shocks,” directly driving up oil and fuel prices worldwide.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the longer the hostilities persist, the greater the threat to the global economy and the higher the human cost.

Australia has been actively working with international partners to ensure the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz so that critical supplies can reach those in need, particularly the most vulnerable populations.

In the official release, the Australian government extended its gratitude to the negotiating teams for their pivotal roles in advancing these de-escalation efforts. Moving forward, Australia urged all parties to uphold international humanitarian law, protect civilian life, and utilize this two-week window to secure a permanent and peaceful resolution to the conflict.
