MHA Issues Nationwide Alert: States on High Vigilance Amid Potential Unrest Following US-Israel Strikes on Iran

NEW DELHI, March 02, 2026 — The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has issued a high-priority nationwide advisory to all states and Union Territories, urging heightened vigilance and proactive security measures following the recent joint military strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran.

The alert, prompted by the confirmed assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on February 28, warns that these rapidly evolving international developments could trigger “ripple effects” across India’s internal security landscape.

With spontaneous protests already erupting among Shia communities in regions such as Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Lucknow, and Hyderabad, the Centre has directed law enforcement agencies to closely monitor both pro-Iran and anti-Iran groups.

Security has been significantly reinforced around American, Israeli, and Iranian diplomatic missions, as well as at Jewish institutions and major tourist destinations frequented by Western nationals, to thwart potential retaliatory actions or disruptive activities by extremist elements.

In its detailed communication, the MHA underscored the need for local police units to intensify checks in crowded areas and conduct regular inspection drives to detect any explosive threats, including Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

Directors General of Police (DGPs) have been instructed to ensure that Quick Response Teams (QRTs) remain operational for immediate deployment in the event of any communal flare-ups.

A major focus of the advisory also includes the rigorous monitoring of social media platforms by cyber cells to curb the spread of inflammatory rhetoric, misinformation, and rumors that could jeopardize communal harmony.

As the government continues to review the situation in real-time, the MHA emphasized a policy of zero tolerance toward any attempts to exploit global tensions for domestic unrest, while simultaneously coordinating with the Ministry of External Affairs to ensure the safety of the Indian diaspora currently residing in the Gulf region.
