Iran Declares 40-Day Mourning Period Following Death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in US-Israeli Strikes

TEHRAN, March 01, 2026 — The Iranian government has officially declared 40 days of national mourning and a seven-day public holiday across the country following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

State media confirmed Sunday morning that the 86-year-old cleric, who led the Islamic Republic for over three decades, was killed during a massive wave of joint military strikes conducted by the United States and Israel.

The “high-precision” operation reportedly targeted the Leader’s compound in Tehran along with several strategic military installations.

In the wake of the announcement, Iranian state television has switched to archive footage of the late leader accompanied by black banners, while several high-ranking officials, including the Defense Minister, are also feared dead in the coordinated blitz.

The death of the Supreme Leader has plunged the nation into a state of uncertainty, as the government has yet to release specific details regarding the funeral arrangements or a definitive succession plan.

While thousands of mourners dressed in black have gathered in Tehran’s Enghelab Square to pay their respects, reports of retaliatory strikes by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) against U.S. and Israeli assets in the region continue to surface.

International observers and the UN Security Council are monitoring the situation closely, as the absence of a designated successor threatens to create a significant power vacuum within the theocratic regime during one of the most volatile periods in Middle Eastern history.
