LEH, LADAKH | January 22, 2026 — The Meteorological Centre Leh has issued a comprehensive weather advisory for the Union Territory of Ladakh, predicting a significant spell of winter weather over the coming week.
While the region is currently experiencing partly cloudy skies, a gradual increase in cloud cover is expected today, with snowfall likely to commence by this evening. Initial precipitation is forecasted for high-altitude areas including the Zojila-Drass axis and the Kargil-Zanskar belt before spreading across the region.
The weather is expected to intensify on January 23rd, with a warning issued for moderate to heavy snowfall. Most parts of the Leh district are anticipated to receive 5 to 10 cm of snow, while many areas in Kargil and Zanskar could see accumulations of up to 30 cm. The Zojila-Drass axis is on high alert for “very heavy snowfall,” with projections exceeding 30 cm.
After a brief lull on January 24th and 25th, a second wave of light to moderate snowfall is predicted for most of Kargil and many parts of Leh on January 27th, followed by a significant weather improvement starting January 28th.In light of these conditions, authorities have issued a critical advisory for travelers and residents.
There is a high risk of closure for major mountain passes, including Zojila, Khardung La, Chang La, Penzila, and Namkila, particularly on January 23rd, 24th, 27th, and 28th. Additionally, air travelers are advised to stay updated, as heavy snowfall is expected to disrupt flight operations at Leh airport on Friday, January 23rd.
