Sikkim Police awarded President of India Police Colour by President Droupadi Murmu

GANGTOK, May 28, 2026:- President Droupadi Murmu presented the prestigious President of India’s Police Colour to the Sikkim Police during a special ceremony in Gangtok. While congratulating the past and present officers of the force, the President commended the Sikkim Police for its dedication to ensuring peace, security, and justice in the region since its establishment in 1897.

She noted that the law enforcement agency has earned the deep affection and respect of the local population through its highly professional conduct and friendly demeanor toward the public.During her address, the President emphasized the critical need for India’s policing system to completely shed its colonial-era mindset. She noted that during the period of colonial rule, the primary objective of the police was to control citizens and enforce the dictates of the ruling regime, resulting in an attitude of ruling over the public rather than cooperating with them.

Stressing that transparency and accountability are indispensable, she stated that the police apparatus must transform into a more citizen-friendly system where ordinary people can register grievances without fear. She also called for a highly sensitive approach toward women, children, and the most vulnerable sections of society.

The President further highlighted that the ultimate objective of the policing system must extend beyond merely apprehending criminals to building a secure, inclusive, and socially conscious society.

She urged police personnel across the nation to evolve into partners and guides for the citizens, which would strengthen public trust, enhance the collective sense of security, and deepen respect for the rule of law.

According to the President, abandoning the outdated colonial outlook and empowering citizens through supportive policing is an essential step toward achieving the national goal of a developed India.
