Kazipet rail manufacturing unit nearing completion to produce new fleet of intercity trains
NEW DELHI, May 28, 2026 :- The Indian Railways’ versatile rolling stock manufacturing unit at Kazipet is on the verge of completion and is slated to begin the production of 200 intercity trains over the next five years.
Union Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw, along with Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu, reviewed the operationalization plans for the facility with senior officials. These new trains are specifically designed to serve short-distance travel of approximately 300 kilometers across the country, featuring frequent stops to accommodate the daily commuting needs of students, professionals, and citizens traveling between adjacent towns and cities for education, healthcare, and employment.
Operating as affordable shuttle services connecting neighboring urban clusters, this extensive fleet is expected to shift a significant volume of local road traffic to the railway network. To ensure passenger comfort and safety, the 20-coach configuration trains will be equipped with modern features such as automatic door-closing mechanisms, superior ventilation systems, safe coach designs, and two toilets positioned at either end of each coach.
Additionally, the inclusion of modern jerk-free couplers and advanced bogies will allow the trains to smoothly operate at speeds of up to 130 kilometers per hour.Emphasizing environmental sustainability, the intercity trains will feature regenerative braking technology, which converts kinetic energy into electricity during braking and feeds it back into the power grid.
This energy-efficient mechanism makes the new fleet a much greener alternative to road transport by significantly reducing carbon emissions. The mass introduction of these advanced trains marks a major step forward by Indian Railways to expand clean and eco-friendly public transportation capacity nationwide.
