New Bridges in Ladakh to Drastically Reduce Travel Times and Boost Connectivity

LEH, July 20, 2026:- Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena laid the foundation stones for two critical motorable bridges over the Siachen River during his first official visit to the Nubra Valley. The infrastructure developments, consisting of the Burma–Sumoor and Tongsted bridges, are designed to significantly improve connectivity and access to essential services for residents in remote parts of the region.

The Burma–Sumoor bridge project, valued at 70 crore rupees, is expected to bring major logistical relief to the valley. Currently, residents traveling between Sumoor and nearby villages like Burma, Charasa, Kuri, and Murgi must navigate a lengthy 70-kilometer route.

Once completed, the new bridge will span across the river to reduce that travel distance to just about 500 meters, which will drastically cut down commuting times and provide faster access to healthcare, schools, markets, and the district headquarters at Diskit.

The second project, the Tongsted Bridge, is being constructed at a cost of 19 crore rupees. This infrastructure will establish reliable, all-weather connectivity for several isolated villages in the area.

According to local authorities, both bridge initiatives align with prime minister Narendra Modi’s broader national vision for inclusive development and the creation of sustainable, world-class infrastructure to bring remote border regions into the mainstream of economic progress.
