NEW DELHI JULY 20 — In a major political showdown escalating tensions between the Union Territory and the Centre, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah took to social media to heavily criticize authorities after being blocked from holding a planned peaceful demonstration at New Delhi’s iconic Jantar Mantar.

The protest, strategically organized by the ruling National Conference (NC) to coincide with the opening day of Parliament’s Monsoon Session, aimed to aggressively demand the immediate restoration of statehood and constitutional rights for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Despite a heavy security lockdown and a lack of formal clearance from the Delhi Police that ultimately halted the physical march, a defiant Abdullah made it clear that the regional leadership would not be intimidated or silenced.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Chief Minister Omar Abdullah asserted that the administrative crackdown would only fuel a much larger, sustained movement. “We were stopped from getting to Jantar Mantar and stopped from protesting peacefully for what is rightfully ours but we were not silenced,” Abdullah posted. Highlighting that the struggle is far from over, the J&K CM added, “This is only the beginning of our struggle for statehood, our rights, our dignity and everything that was taken away from us.” While regional opposition groups like the PDP have pressured the NC to expand their agitation to include the restoration of Article 370, Abdullah’s bold stand in the national capital solidifies a new, confrontational phase of regional politics, shifting the battleground for J&K’s political destiny directly to New Delhi’s doorstep.
