Jammu and Kashmir Government Lowers Diesel Prices with Key Tax Cut

Srinagar April 15,2026 :- Drivers across Jammu and Kashmir are starting to see lower prices at fuel stations following a significant update to the local tax structure.

The Finance Department recently issued a formal notification that reduces the tax burden on diesel oil by implementing a rate of 16% minus a fixed reduction of Rs. 2.50 per litre.

Even with a standard cess of Rs. 1.00 per litre included in the calculation, the policy shift represents a clear effort by the administration to provide financial breathing room for the transport sector and everyday commuters alike.

The new pricing policy officially went into effect on April 11, 2026, after being authorized by Shailendra Kumar, the Financial Commissioner for the Finance Department.

This change specifically modifies earlier tax regulations from 2025, streamlining the cost of fuel under the Jammu and Kashmir Motor Spirit and Diesel Oil Taxation of Sales Act.

By making diesel more affordable, the government is addressing the high logistical costs often associated with the region’s terrain, helping to stabilize the expenses involved in moving goods and people across the Union Territory.
