India Expresses Deep Concern to Iranian Ambassador Over Strait of Hormuz Shooting Incident
NEW DELHI, April 18, 2026:- The Ministry of External Affairs called in the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran for a meeting with the Foreign Secretary this evening to address a shooting incident involving two Indian-flagged ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
During the discussion, the Foreign Secretary conveyed India’s deep concern regarding the firing on merchant vessels and emphasized the significant importance India attaches to the safety of mariners and shipping.
He recalled that Iran had previously assisted in the safe passage of several India-bound ships and urged the Ambassador to facilitate a return to those security measures at the earliest opportunity.
The Foreign Secretary reiterated the serious nature of the incident and requested the Ambassador to convey India’s views directly to the authorities in Iran.
The meeting focused on the necessity of resuming the process of facilitating the safe movement of India-bound vessels across the Strait to ensure maritime security.
The Iranian Ambassador undertook the responsibility to communicate these concerns and requests to the Iranian government for further consideration.
