Centre approves 243 crore for PM SHRI schools in Jammu and Kashmir for 2026-27

Jammu, April 30: The Project Approval Board for the PM SHRI scheme has sanctioned a total outlay of 243 crore for Jammu and Kashmir for the 2026–27 financial year.

The approval was finalized during a meeting chaired by Union Secretary Sanjay Kumar and attended by Commissioner Secretary Ram Nivas Sharma alongside senior officials from Samagra Shiksha. The board reviewed the progress of the previous year, noting that 194.53 crore of the 200.11 crore allocated for 2025–26 was successfully utilized for civil works and infrastructure through the Public Works Department.

The board highlighted a significant academic improvement across the Union Territory, specifically noting a 10 percent rise in board examination results for secondary and higher secondary students. Federal officials expressed satisfaction with the overall financial and physical milestones achieved under the scheme. Currently, 396 schools in Jammu and Kashmir are being upgraded under the PM SHRI initiative to enhance the quality of education at the high and higher secondary levels.

During the session, the Ministry of Education reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the effective implementation of these educational plans in the future. Officials also addressed recent media reports regarding low expenditure under the scheme, clarifying that such claims are inaccurate and do not reflect the actual progress on the ground.

The continued funding aims to strengthen the school ecosystem and provide modern learning environments for students throughout the region.
