Security Heightened in Srinagar on Article 370 Abrogation Anniversary

SRINAGAR, Aug 5 — Tight security arrangements were put in place across Srinagar on Wednesday to thwart potential protests on the seventh anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370. Officials deployed heavy security forces throughout Jammu and Kashmir’s summer capital, concentrating forces around the Lal Chowk city center to maintain order.

Roads leading to the headquarters of major regional political parties, including the National Conference and the Peoples Democratic Party, were sealed off as a precautionary measure. Both parties issued calls for demonstrations to mark the 2019 decision by the central government that revoked the special constitutional status of the former state.

Ahead of the anniversary, Peoples Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti led a candlelight vigil and sit-in outside her party headquarters on Tuesday night. The former chief minister reiterated demands for the full restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status during the demonstration.
