J&K Government Unveils Strategic Roadmap to Transform JKML into Profit-Making PSU

SRINAGAR, AUGUST 04: In a major push to harness the mineral wealth of Jammu and Kashmir for economic growth and employment generation, the 176th Meeting of the Board of Directors (BoDs) of Jammu & Kashmir Minerals Limited (JKML) was held today at the Civil Secretariat under the chairmanship of Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary. Addressing the board, the Deputy Chief Minister emphasized that JKML plays a critical role in the industrial development of the region and must evolve into a model, vibrant, and financially self-reliant public sector undertaking (PSU). Reaffirming the government’s stance, Choudhary stated that the mineral wealth of Jammu and Kashmir belongs primarily to its people, asserting that scientific and systematic resource management will unlock significant new avenues for local employment and revenue generation.

To achieve this vision, the Deputy Chief Minister directed the corporation’s management to strictly enforce time-bound execution across all ongoing and upcoming projects. Key strategies highlighted for turning JKML into a profitable enterprise include the optimum utilization of existing mineral resources, absolute transparency in operational functioning, and the strategic rationalization of manpower, particularly at the Kalakote coal mines. While evaluating corporate expansion plans, Choudhary called for immediate, concrete steps to operationalize the Limestone Mine at Khrew, approve additional Gypsum Blocks in Ramban District, and set up the Fuel Pump at Khrew in Pulwama. These targeted projects are expected to significantly boost JKML’s overall production capacity while providing crucial support to broader industrial and infrastructure developments across Jammu and Kashmir.

Prioritizing youth empowerment, the Deputy Chief Minister further instructed JKML leadership to expedite new mining ventures to maximize job opportunities for local youth. During the session, the Board conducted a thorough progress review of active projects and held detailed deliberations on long-term strategies aimed at scaling mineral output, expanding business reach, and embedding sustainable, scientific mining practices across all operational sites. Additionally, the Board formally approved multiple financial and administrative proposals structured to optimize operational efficiency, reinforce institutional governance, and uplift the overarching performance of the corporation. The high-level meeting was attended by ACS, Mining Department, Ashwani Kumar; the Director of Geology & Mining; the Managing Director of J&K Minerals Limited; alongside other senior department officials.
