CBI Appointments: IPS Officers Atul Kumar Thakur and Pankaj Kumar Singh Appointed as Joint Directors

NEW DELHI, July 14, 2026 — In a key administrative development, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the promotion and appointment of senior IPS officers Atul Kumar Thakur and Pankaj Kumar Singh as Joint Directors in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

According to an official order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) dated July 13, 2026, both officers belong to the 2008 batch of the AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory) cadre and are currently serving as Deputy Inspectors General (DIG) within the premier investigating agency.

Under the newly approved mandates, Atul Kumar Thakur’s appointment as Joint Director will take effect from the date he assumes charge of the post, spanning an overall tenure of seven years up to November 24, 2028, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Similarly, Pankaj Kumar Singh will elevate to the rank of Joint Director from the date of his assumption of charge, serving an overall tenure of seven years up to December 5, 2028, or until subsequent executive orders are issued. This strategic restructuring within the CBI’s top brass is expected to further strengthen the agency’s leadership and ongoing high-profile investigations.
