Jammu and Kashmir ranks second nationally in tuberculosis elimination campaign
SRINAGAR, June 16, 2026:- Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo chaired a comprehensive review meeting of the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan to assess the progress of tuberculosis elimination efforts across the Union Territory. The meeting was attended by Health and Medical Education Commissioner Secretary M. Raju, National Health Mission Mission Director Akriti Sagar, and other senior medical officers.
During the session, it was revealed that Jammu and Kashmir has emerged as one of the top-performing regions in India, securing the second rank among all states and union territories under Phase-II of the national 100-Day campaign launched on March 24, 2026.The review highlighted major milestones achieved during the first five months of 2026, including the screening of over 2.45 lakh vulnerable individuals and a 90 percent utilization rate for advanced molecular diagnostic testing.
Additionally, 4,472 tuberculosis cases were notified, representing 40 percent of the annual target, while over 2.52 lakh presumptive tests were conducted. The region also demonstrated strong community involvement, with registered Nikshay Mitras increasing to over 13,100 and more than 2,100 patients receiving nutritional support through Poshan Kits.
Furthermore, tuberculosis preventive treatment coverage surged from 7 percent in Phase-I to 34 percent in Phase-II, reflecting better protection for high-risk household contacts.Despite these positive results, the Chief Secretary noted that performance varies across districts and called for accelerated efforts to address gaps in lower-performing areas.
He directed health authorities to intensify X-ray screenings, expand mobile health camps in remote villages, and eliminate delays in financial assistance distribution under the Nikshay Poshan Yojana through a dedicated clearance drive.
Emphasizing the power of digital health tools, he instructed field teams to ensure all notified patients adopt the newly launched TB Mukt Bharat App and Khushi Chatbot to improve treatment adherence and counseling.
