Anantnag Food Safety Crackdown: Fake ‘Imported’ Basil Seed Drink Worth ₹3.56 Lakh Seized
ANANTNAG, May 14, 2026 — As per the press release issued by the Food Safety Department, a major enforcement operation was carried out across Anantnag district following credible inputs regarding the illegal sale of a “Basil Seed Drink” falsely marketed as an imported “American” brand product. During raids at multiple high-profile locations—including M/S Aayet Trading Company at the General Bus Stand, M/S Hamas on Bypass Road, and M/S Valley Traders & Distributors in Pushoo Market—officials seized 150 cases of the beverage valued at approximately ₹3,56,400. While the packaging claimed the drinks were a “Product of Thailand” manufactured in Bangkok, preliminary investigations revealed a total absence of mandatory importer details and the use of a fraudulent FSSAI license number.
The department’s investigation suggests that the product, despite its international branding, is likely manufactured locally by entities in Sonipat, New Delhi, and Jammu to deceive unsuspecting consumers. Discrepancies in labeling and the suspected local origin of the illicit stock have led the authorities to take the entire consignment into custody for legal and analytical proceedings under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Samples have been dispatched for laboratory testing to verify safety and quality standards, while a comprehensive probe is underway to dismantle the distribution network. The Food Safety Department has urged the public to remain vigilant against misleading labels, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding public health from such fraudulent food business practices.
