Bandipora–Gurez Road Reopens for Regulated Traffic; Essential Supplies Reach Snow-Bound Valley

BANDIPORA, February 13, 2026 — Bringing significant relief to the residents of the remote Gurez Valley, the District Administration of Bandipora officially reopened the strategic Bandipora–Gurez road for regulated traffic today.

Under close supervision from local authorities and specialized departments, a convoy of 23 vehicles successfully completed the journey from Bandipora to Gurez. Due to the challenging winter conditions and snow-covered terrain, travel was strictly limited to Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) equipped with anti-skid chains, while Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) remained barred. To ensure maximum safety along the treacherous mountain passes, traffic from the opposite direction—Gurez to Bandipora—was temporarily restricted.

The reopening is particularly timely as the region prepares for the upcoming holy month of Ramadan. Among the permitted vehicles were those carrying essential commodities, ensuring that food and necessary supplies are well-stocked for the local population.

Residents expressed joy at the restoration of the link, which serves as a lifeline for the isolated valley. The District Administration has praised the smooth execution of the movement but continues to urge commuters to check road status via official control rooms and strictly follow safety advisories before attempting the journey, emphasizing that cooperation is key to maintaining a safe and hassle-free transit corridor.
