Udhampur Police Seize Illicit Liquor in Garhi; Bootlegger Apprehended

UDHAMPUR, February 3, 2026 — In a successful crackdown on the illegal liquor trade, the Udhampur Police arrested a bootlegger and recovered a significant quantity of illicit spirits during a routine patrol in the Garhi area.

The operation, conducted by a team from the Rehambal Police Station, took place near Ammunition Morh after officers spotted a suspicious individual carrying a blue bag while traveling from the Chopra Shop direction.

Upon noticing the police presence, the suspect attempted to evade the party by retreating, which prompted immediate intervention by the officers.

The apprehended individual has been identified as Ashok Kumar, son of the late Munshi Ram and a resident of Garhi, Udhampur. A thorough search of his belongings led to the recovery of 12 bottles of JK Special Whisky (750 ml each).

When questioned, Kumar was unable to provide a legal permit or a satisfactory explanation for the possession of the liquor, leading to the immediate seizure of the contraband.

Following the arrest, authorities registered FIR No. 24/2026 under Section 48(a) of the Excise Act at the Rehambal Police Station. A detailed investigation is currently underway to determine the source and intended destination of the illicit supply.
