J&K Traffic Advisory: Single-Lane Restrictions on Jammu-Srinagar NH-44; HMVs Restricted to Alternate Days
SRINAGAR/JAMMU – February 2, 2026The Traffic Police Headquarters, J&K, has issued a comprehensive travel advisory for February 3, 2026, following significant traffic disruptions on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44). Due to road sinking at Kishtwari Pather, which has created a narrow 20–30 meter single-lane stretch, and recent vehicle breakdowns between Marog and Kishtwari Pather, authorities have implemented a “one-way” alternating schedule for Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs).
For tomorrow, HMVs will only be permitted to ply from the NAVYUG Tunnel (Qazigund side) towards Jammu, with a strict cutoff time of 16:00 hrs. No heavy vehicles will be allowed beyond this time to ensure the safety of commuters and the fluidity of the narrow carriage-way.Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs), passenger cars, and private vehicles are permitted to move from both sides (Jammu to Srinagar and vice-versa), provided weather conditions remain favorable.
However, commuters are strongly urged to travel during daytime hours only. Night travel is being discouraged due to the high risk of shooting stones, landslides, and ongoing construction work between Ramban and Banihal.
Furthermore, authorities warn of slippery road conditions caused by frost formation between Nachlana and the NAVYUG Tunnel, making anti-skid precautions essential for those traversing higher elevations.
Regarding other major routes, the Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumari (SSG) Road will be open for LMVs moving from Srinagar toward Kargil between 11:00 hrs and 15:00 hrs, strictly requiring anti-skid chains.
Meanwhile, the Mughal Road and Kishtwar-Sinthan-Anantnag (NH-244) remain closed due to heavy snow accumulation.
Travelers are advised to verify road status through official Traffic Control Units (TCU) in Jammu, Srinagar, or Ramban before commencing their journey.
