J&K Traffic Advisory: Rain and Snow Predicted; New Travel Restrictions for Jammu-Srinagar NH-44

JAMMU/SRINAGAR, February 01, 2026 — The Traffic Police Headquarters J&K has issued a critical advisory for February 2, 2026, amid forecasts of inclement weather and potential snowfall over the next 24 hours.

Commuters on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) are currently facing delays due to single-lane traffic at Kishtwari Pather and Marog, exacerbated by a 30-meter stretch of sunken road. While Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) are permitted from both sides subject to fair weather, travelers are strongly urged to stick to daytime journeys to avoid the high risk of shooting stones, landslides, and slippery frost between Nachlana and the Navyug Tunnel.

Under the new plan, Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) will operate on an alternate-day basis due to the narrow carriage-way. For tomorrow, HMVs are scheduled to move from Jakheni (Udhampur) towards Srinagar, with a strict cutoff time of 14:00 hrs. Security Forces have also been requested to align their convoy movements from Jammu to Srinagar to prevent congestion.

Meanwhile, the Mughal Road and Kishtwar-Sinthan-Anantnag road remain closed due to heavy snow accumulation. On the Srinagar-Leh (SSG) Road, only LMVs equipped with anti-skid chains will be allowed to ply between Sonamarg and Kargil during specific morning windows, provided the BRO gives the green signal.

Drivers are advised to maintain lane discipline and avoid overtaking, as single-lane sections cannot accommodate traffic pressure.

Before starting any journey, commuters must verify the current road status through the following Traffic Control Unit (TCU) helplines: Jammu: 0191-2459048 / 9419147732, Srinagar: 0194-2450022 / 18001807091, Ramban: 9419993745, Udhampur: 8491928625.
