J&K Traffic Advisory: NH-44 Open for LMVs on Both Sides; HMVs Restricted to One-Way Move on February 1

Jammu/Srinagar, January 31, 2026: The Traffic Police Headquarters, Jammu & Kashmir, has issued a fresh travel advisory for February 1, 2026, confirming that Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) and private cars will be permitted to ply from both Jammu and Srinagar, subject to fair weather and road conditions.

However, a significant restriction remains for Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs), which will only be allowed to move one-way from the NAVYUG Tunnel (Qazigund side) towards Jammu. This restriction follows a challenging 24-hour period where traffic slowed significantly on NH-44 due to single-lane stretches at Marog and Kishtwari Pather, compounded by the breakdown of two heavy vehicles.

A critical 20–30 meter single-lane stretch at Kishtwari Pather, caused by road sinking, has forced authorities to implement an alternate-day movement plan for HMVs.

Commuters using the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway are strongly advised to travel during daylight hours, as night travel poses high risks of landslides and shooting stones, particularly between Ramban and Banihal.

Furthermore, recent snow accumulation has caused frost and slippery conditions between Nachlana and the NAVYUG Tunnel, making anti-skid precautions essential for those heading toward Kargil via the SSG road.

Regarding other major routes, the Kishtwar-Sinthan-Anantnag (NH-244) and Mughal Road remain closed due to heavy snow accumulation.

On the SSG Road, LMVs equipped with anti-skid chains will be allowed from Srinagar toward Kargil between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM, provided the Border Roads Organization (BRO) gives clearance.

Travelers are urged to verify road status through the dedicated Traffic Control Unit (TCU) helplines in Jammu, Srinagar, Ramban, and Udhampur before starting their journey.
