Transformation of Assam: Amit Shah Launches Projects Worth ₹1,715 Crore and Designates Dibrugarh as Second Capital

DIBRUGARH, January 30, 2026 — Marking a historic milestone in the development of Northeast India, Home Minister Amit Shah laid the foundation stone for the new Assam Legislative Assembly building in Dibrugarh today, officially initiating the city’s transformation into the state’s second capital. This landmark event was part of a massive infrastructure push involving the inauguration and ground-breaking of five major projects totaling approximately ₹1,715 crore. During the ceremony, Amit Shah emphasized that while previous administrations left regions neglected, the current government is committed to an inclusive Assam where Dibrugarh serves as a primary administrative hub. Key highlights of the day included the launch of a world-class Multi-Disciplinary Sports Complex, a new Wildlife Research Institute, and residential complexes for legislators. Highlighting the economic surge under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Shah noted that Assam’s GSDP has nearly doubled from ₹4.1 lakh crore to ₹7.2 lakh crore, signifying a shift from an era of unrest to one of unprecedented prosperity.

The Home Minister further lauded the strategic international achievements of the central government, specifically pointing to the India-EU trade deal signed by Narendra Modi. This agreement has revolutionized the local economy by allowing Assam’s famous tea to reach European markets from Paris to Berlin with zero tariffs, directly benefiting thousands of workers and growers. Addressing internal security and demographic concerns, Amit Shah delivered a stern message regarding illegal immigration, asserting that systems are now in place to ensure infiltrators can no longer enter India. He vowed that those already present would be identified and removed to protect the security and cultural identity of the region. Contrastingly, he highlighted the restoration of peace, noting that the sounds of explosions and curfews that once defined the state have been replaced by the music of Bhupen Hazarika. From granting land ownership to over 3 lakh tea garden workers to reclaiming sacred lands from encroachers, Shah reiterated that the region remains a top priority because the North East lives in the heart of the Prime Minister.
