Two convicted for hoisting Khalistani flag at Moga DC office
New Delhi, May 01, 2026The Special Court of the National Investigation Agency in Mohali has convicted and sentenced two individuals to imprisonment for their involvement in a 2020 case regarding the hoisting of a Khalistani flag at a government building in Punjab.
The court found that Inderjeet Singh and Jaspal Singh, both residents of Moga, acted at the instigation of Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the general counsel of the banned organization Sikhs for Justice. The convicts have been sentenced to five years and six months in jail.
Additionally, a fine of 16,000 rupees each has been imposed under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act. While these two have been sentenced, other associates including Gurpatwant Singh Pannun and Rana Singh, also known as Harpreet Singh, were previously declared proclaimed offenders by the court in 2021.
The incident took place on August 14, 2020, just before Independence Day celebrations. Inderjeet and Jaspal entered the Deputy Commissioner’s office complex in Moga and hoisted a saffron flag with the word Khalistan printed on it.
During the act, they insulted the Indian national flag by cutting its rope, causing it to fall to the ground, and then dragged the tricolour.Investigations revealed that the duo carried out these actions in exchange for a cash reward offered by Sikhs for Justice.
In the days leading up to the incident, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun had released social media videos urging youth in Punjab and Haryana to hoist such flags at government buildings, promising financial incentives for those who complied.
