Omar Abdullah Champions AI Integration and Cultural Heritage at GCET Jammu Tech Summit

JAMMU, April 27, 2026 — Chief Minister Omar Abdullah emphasized the urgent need to bridge the gap between cutting-edge technology and cultural preservation while inaugurating the 11th National Conference on Emerging and Innovative Trends in Engineering Technology at the Government College of Engineering and Technology.

During the event, organized in collaboration with IIT Kharagpur, Abdullah also inaugurated the new ₹19.71 crore School of Architecture building. Addressing a gathering of students and experts, he argued that while modernity is essential, Jammu and Kashmir’s infrastructure must reflect its unique historical identity rather than relying solely on glass and steel, expressing concern over the fading focus on heritage in local construction.

The Chief Minister highlighted the transformative potential of artificial intelligence and machine learning, particularly within the tourism sector, noting that these tools could revolutionize destination management and visitor experiences.

However, he maintained a grounded perspective on automation, insisting that technological integration must complement human labor to protect livelihoods in a region where employment remains a top priority.

Abdullah stressed that while the natural beauty of the region naturally attracts visitors, leveraging technology to ensure seamless service is key to securing repeat tourism across pilgrimage, border, and leisure segments.

In a significant boost to campus infrastructure, Abdullah announced immediate funding for a new auditorium and committed to establishing a dedicated incubation centre at GCET within the current year.

He framed these initiatives as vital steps toward transforming the youth from job seekers into entrepreneurs, asserting that the government’s role is to provide the environment where innovators can thrive.

The ceremony concluded with the Chief Minister reviewing student-led exhibitions and research papers, alongside Education Minister Sakeena Itoo, who reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to making J&K’s educational institutions global centers of research and excellence.
