NHAI introduces barrier less multi lane free flow tolling at Gharaunda plaza on NH 44

NEW DELHI, June 25, 2026 – The National Highways Authority of India has commenced the rollout of the Multi-Lane Free Flow tolling system at Gharaunda Toll Plaza on the Panipat to Jalandhar section of National Highway 44.

This initiative marks a significant step toward achieving seamless and technology-driven highway travel by enabling automated toll collection without requiring vehicles to stop or slow down. The advanced electronic toll collection system leverages high-performance sensors and cameras mounted on overhead gantries to automatically identify vehicles and deduct fees through FASTag, allowing uninterrupted travel at highway speeds.

The introduction of this system is expected to eliminate physical toll barriers, drastically reducing waiting times, travel delays, and congestion. By removing the need for repeated braking, idling, and acceleration at toll plazas, the barrier-less setup helps reduce fuel consumption and enables faster journey times.

To maintain smooth traffic flow, strict enforcement measures have been implemented to prevent parking, encroachments, and unauthorized stoppages within 200 meters on either side of the tolling zone, while route patrol vehicles and local agencies will monitor the stretches to prevent violations. To manage instances where payments are not successfully processed due to insufficient balance or inactive tags, a structured e-notice mechanism has been introduced.

Road users can verify and manage these notices through the designated parivahan portal or the Rajmargyatra mobile app by authenticating via a one-time password sent to their registered mobile number. Payments made within 72 hours will be charged at the normal applicable toll rate, while payments made after this window will incur twice the applicable rate. Users can also submit grievances through the portal within 72 hours if they believe a notice was issued incorrectly.

The highway authority advises all commuters to maintain a sufficient balance in their accounts, ensure tags are properly affixed to windshields, and use compliant high security registration plates. This new system follows successful implementations at Choryasi in Gujarat, Mundka in Delhi, and Daulatpura in Rajasthan.

The expansion to Gharaunda Toll Plaza represents another milestone in developing a modern, efficient, and intelligent national highway network designed to enhance commuter convenience and foster a sustainable transport ecosystem.
